I completely agree, you can never have too many photos of grumpy elephant seals. So let’s get factual.
The seals seen here, at Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, are northern elephant seals, or Mirounga angustirostris if you want to sound posh. Apparently they can hold their breath for up to 2 hours, during which time they can dive to depths of between 300 m to 1,750 m (1000 to 5800 feet for our American friends). Can you imagine all that effort for a bit of lunch. And I thought dragging myself to the kitchen for a sandwich and a bit of cake was hard work.
